The fundraising goal to pay for the restoration of the lighthouse in South Haven has been exceeded. According to the Historical Association of South Haven, they have raised $315,000 to date from roughly 15-hundred donors. The money is higher than the goal by $15,000. HASH officials say the funding will assure the 112-year-old lighthouse at the end of the South Pier entrance to the Black River has a “lasting life.” The original lighthouse was made from wood in 1872 and replaced in 1903. The lantern portion is believed to be from the original lighthouse, and the catwalk leading to the lighthouse is one of only four that survive in the state. Restoration work started this fall on the interior, and work will start on the exterior in the spring.
