Proos Nuclear Waste Resolution Passes

The Michigan Senate this week approved a resolution from State Senator John Proos calling on the federal government to complete a facility for the safe storage of spent nuclear fuel, or a refund of billions of dollars to electric customers who have already paid for it. Proos says that a federal law from 1982 requires the government to build a site for the storage of nuclear waste. It still hasn’t happened, and Proos says that spent nuclear fuel is just stored by the power plants.

Proos notes that, for years, electric ratepayers have been paying into a fund that’s supposed to finance the construction and maintenance of a federal site. His resolution asks that that money be paid back if the storage site isn’t built.
