Police have made a break in their investigation into several armed robberies reported around the Niles area since late September. On Tuesday night, a task force of officers organized by Niles Police, Michigan State Police, and the Cass and Berrien County Sheriffs Departments made an arrest outside of the Sunrise Liquor store on Huntley Road in Howard Township. The officers had been observing the store when they saw a possible suspect’s vehicle pull behind the store, and then a man got out and ran inside. As he was leaving, officers from the Cass County Sherriff’s Department and Michigan State Police confronted him, and he took off for a brief chase east on M-60 before being caught. Shortly after that, the suspect’s vehicle was stopped near Huntley and Yankee Streets, where a female accomplice was taken into custody. Police say the man is a 39 year old from the Niles area, while the woman is a 30 year old from the Berrien Springs area. The vehicle had been reported previously as possibly being involved in an October 19th robbery attempt in Berrien Springs. The suspects are expected to be arraigned this week in Cass County.
