Bills have passed the state Senate to make it a misdemeanor for asking someone to buy ephedrine or pseudoephedrine for the purposes of making methamphetamine. It’s already a felony if someone actually gets another person to buy these over-the-counter drugs for making meth. This legislation would make it a crime for just asking someone to do it, even if they say no. State Senator Margaret O’Brien is a sponsor of the legislation.

O’Brien says Kalamazoo County, where she’s from, is among the top meth-producing counties in Michigan along with Van Buren County. Under the bill package, those convicted of attempted solicitation could face up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine.
