A measure clearing the way for medical marijuana dispensaries to open in communities where they’re wanted has passed the Michigan House. State Representative Mike Callton of Barry County is sponsoring the bill.

Listen:

The bill creates a tiered regulatory system for dispensaries and requires them to pay a 3% tax. People buying medical marijuana would also have to pay the state’s 6% sales tax. Two other medical marijuana bills also passed the House. One would allow edible forms of medical marijuana for those who don’t want to smoke it. Representative Lisa Posthumus Lyons sponsored that, and notes edible marijuana is currently illegal.

Another bill creates a program to track medical marijuana from planting to sale. The bills are now before the Michigan Senate.
