Today Is School Count Day

It’s an important day for schools across Michigan’s Great Southwest and the state as a whole. The first Wednesday in October is the official school count day, and state aid to districts is determined by the number of kids who are at their desks today. Each student is worth $7,391 at the very least to every school district in per-pupil grants, with all districts except New Buffalo and Bridgman in Berrien County receiving the baseline. New Buffalo Area Schools receives $10,004 per student, while Bridgman’s foundation grant is $8,225 per student according to the Michigan Senate Fiscal Agency. Some districts are offering incentives to get students into class. An example of that is in the Grand Rapids Public Schools, where students are not required to wear uniforms today.
