The Meijer store in Benton Harbor was evacuated on Wednesday afternoon after a someone started a fire in the bedding department. Benton Township Police say that some of the department’s officers were already at the store working a criminal investigation shortly after one pm when the fire broke out. The fire was put out by Meijer Loss Prevention officers with extinguishers, and no one was injured. Police say that they haven’t yet identified a suspect, but the investigation continues. Assisting at the scene was the Benton Township Fire Department, and anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Benton Township Police. Wednesday’s incident was the second fire reported at the Benton Township Meijer in the past week. Benton Township firefighters were also called there Saturday for a small fire in a women’s restroom.
