On the heels of a University of Michigan study which determined that the Straits would be the “worst possible place” for a Great Lakes oil spill, hundreds took part in a drill this week to test that. Ed Golder of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources believes the drill, simulating a pipe burst of Enbridge Energy’s Line 5 in the Straits involving the DNR, Enbridge, the Coast Guard, went well.

Charlie Usher of Enbridge contractor with Marine Pollution Control Corporation in Detroit says over time, the area would recover from a spill. He adds, however, that the industry considers it a success to recover about 30% of the oil spilled. An Enbridge pipeline burst in Calhoun County in 2010, sending hundreds of thousands of gallons of crude oil into the Kalamazoo River.
