Black Bear Back In Michigan

The bear that passed through southwest Michigan this spring and early summer has returned to Michigan after an excusion into Indiana. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources tells us that the black bear has been around New Buffalo for the past few weeks, not doing much damage other than to a few bird feeders and a bee hive. DNR officials in Indiana had been trying to trap the bear so it could be shipped back to a northern area of Michigan, where it came from, but he’s not facing that sort of relocation if he sticks around southwest Michigan. DNR wildlife specialist Jordyn Richardson says that they’re not planning to catch him, as it appears “he’s just being a bear.” She advises people in the area to take down bird feeders and secure their trash cans. Also, if you spot the bear, let the DNR know.
