The Berrien County Sheriffs Department is once again gearing up to offer women in the area free self defense training. Three rounds of RAD — or, rape aggression defense — system classes are coming up, and you can sing up now. The Sheriffs Department’’s Colleen Rutter says that the classes focus on avoiding dangerous situations, and being able to get out of them should they arise.
“We teach them to identify the vulnerable areas, and the different techniques that could be used in those vulnerable areas, depending on their location, or what the aggressor is wearing, depending on the situation,” Rutter said.
Rutter says RAD teaches things that could be used by anyone, regardless of strength. A round of three, four-hour classes is coming up next month in Berrien Springs, and there will be sessions in October in Coloma, and November in sawyer. To find out more, call 983-7141, extension 4922.
