Coming in third in the primary was the Reverend James Atterberry, who got 167 votes, most of which Hightower believes would have gone to him otherwise. The race was the only one with candidates in Berrien County, but elsewhere, there were ballot proposals to be decided. In Niles Township, voters said no to a request to raise property taxes by 65 dollars a year for road maintenance, coming out 726 to 542 against the measure. The Berrien Springs Oronoko Township Fire Department, however, was given the voters’ permission to raise property taxes 35 dollars a year for five years to buy a new fire truck, 398 to 278. Also, a police millage renewal in Berrien Springs-Oronoko Township was also approved, as were a fire department millage in Watervliet Township, and a library millage in Buchanan.
