Political Science Professor Talks Supreme Court Ruling

The US Supreme Court decision on Friday legalizing gay marriage across the country will be all but impossible for opponents to overcome. At least, that’s according Doctor Mark Hurwitz, a professor of political science at Western Michigan University. While there are efforts mounting to pass legislation that requires marriage ceremonies to be officiated by clergy in order to skirt the new law, Hurwitz says that tactic will never hold up.

Hurwitz says that, while it’s obvious the court was deeply split on the issue, a majority opinion is all that’s needed, and is just as good as a unanimous one. In his opinion, the ruling Friday is similar to previous court rulings that struck down interracial marriages, and the new law of the land will eventually be just as accepted.
