County Clerks Work To Prepare For Same Sex Marriages

Now that same sex marriage is legal in Michigan, county clerks have been scrambling to get the necessary forms available to the public. Berrien County Clerk Sharon Tyler says that you can now download the newly updated affidavit for a license at BerrienCounty.org. The main difference between the new one and the old one is that the previously used form said “bride” and “groom,” whereas the new one says “applicant 1” and “applicant 2.” Tyler says that Monday would be the soonest a same sex couple could get their license and be married.

Tyler’s office is not waiving the three day waiting period for someone to get a marriage license because, she says, she rarely waives the waiting period, in general. If you must get hitched sooner, then the place to go in southwest Michigan is Cass County, where they are waiving the waiting period, and in fact, always do for everyone. If you apply for a marriage license in Cass County now, you could get it right away, and be married within minutes, assuming you have someone on hand to officiate.
