An abandoned factory in South Haven is being purchased by the city. This week, the city council authorized the purchase of the former SE Overton factory, which used to make gun stocks, located at Elkenburg and Indiana Streets. Assistant City Manager Paul Vandenbosch says that the blighted building will be demolished so that something else can be done with the 5.7 acre parcel.

The property was foreclosed on by the Van Buren County Treasurer’s office after its owner failed to pay property taxes. The city is aiming to buy it from the county for 98 thousand dollars, 40 thousand of which will later be reimbursed. The cost to demolish the building is expected to be about 350 thousand dollars. Vandenbosch says that it could be turned into a residential area.
