MI Road Funding Plan Could End Earned Income Tax Credit

Some of Michigan’s working families could lose out on a tax credit that helps them make ends meet. The Michigan House soon may vote on a plan to raise money to fix the state’s roads by eliminating the state Earned Income Tax Credit. Allan Wachendorfer, with the National Association of Social Workers’ Michigan Chapter, says that an estimated 820 thousand families benefit from the state EITC, and for some, the credit helps eliminates difficult choices like keeping the lights on or putting food on the table.

Four years ago, lawmakers reduced the Earned Income Tax Credit from 20 percent to six percent, while at the same time giving businesses a 1.6 billion dollar tax break. Wachendorfer says leaders need to consider options that increase revenue and are the least regressive as possible.
