State Superintendent Lumps Benton Harbor Schools In With Detroit For Financial T

Michigan State Superintendent Mike Flanagan says while there are success stories for most of the school districts in the state that are in the red, some remain problematic including one of our local districts.

Listen:

Flanagan told state lawmakers on Wednesday that of the 57 districts that were in the red, 46 are expected to be in the black or have significantly trimmed that debt by June 30. He believes the Detroit Public Schools are so far gone that they will need a state bailout. That district is spending $56 million a year on debt alone.

Listen:

Flanagan noted most deficit districts typically have low academic achievement, and the schools are being forced to cut academic programs in order to make the budget work.
