Proos, Pscholka Pleased With Budget Passage

The 2016 Fiscal Year budget is headed to Governor Snyder’s desk for his approval. House Appropriations Committee Chairman Al Pscholka says the last several years have been a welcome departure from 2007 when state government shut down due to lawmakers being unable to reach a deal on the budget before the start of the fiscal year on October 1.

In addition to finding $400 million for roads, the budget tackles the state’s long-term obligation for teacher retirement benefits according to Senator John Proos of St. Joseph.

The omnibus budget bill passed the House 70-39 and the Senate 22-16, while the education budget had broad bipartisan support in the House, where it sailed through 99-10. The Senate passed it 24-14. The governor plans to sign the budgets mid-month. Overall, the budget plan is for $54.5 billion and includes more money for roads, schools and universities while cutting the movie incentives offered by the state.
