Dakota Eliason To Be Resentenced To Maximum 60 Years In June

Dakota Eliason will not serve the rest of his life in prison for killing his step-grandfather in 2010. Berrien County Prosecutor Michael Sepic has filed a motion requesting a new sentence with a minimum of 25 to 40 years behind bars, and no more than 60. Eliason will be re-sentenced on June 26. He had previously been sentenced to life behind bars with no parole, but a U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 2012 regarding no-parole sentences for minors resulted in a new Michigan law requiring prosecutors to file such a motion if a sentence of life without parole is sought for juvenile offenders convicted of first-degree murder. Eliason was 14 at the time he shot and killed Jesse Miles as he was sleeping in Buchanan Township. Judge Scott Schofield ruled on Thursday that due to his age and prospects for rehabilitation, he should not serve the rest of his life in prison.
