SWM Agriculture Looking Strong Heading Into Summer

Farmers around southwest Michigan are looking forward to a good summer, as so far, it looks like the harsh winter didn’t do too much damage to their crops. Mark Longstroth, with the MSU Extension office in Van Buren County, says that the fruit crops are turning out nicely, for the most part.

However, Longstroth notes that there was some damage over the winter to peaches, grapes, and blueberries. As for field crops, he says that farmers are busy this week planting corn and soybeans, and everything looks all right there. Longstroth also expects that they’ll start to pick the strawberries this week, meaning you could find them in farmers markets as soon as next week.
