Soldier From Berrien County Dies

An investigation is underway after a soldier from Berrien County was found dead in Texas. Officials from Fort Hood this week confirmed that 30 year old Lieutenant Dillon Lee Mitchell, of Berrien Springs, died on May 25th from an apparent gunshot wound at his on base home. A press release states that Mitchell joined the Army in 2008, and was deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from October of 2009 to September of 2010. He also was awarded several honors and awards during his military career. They include two Army Commendation Medals, two Army Achievement Medals, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal with a campaign star, an Army Service Ribbon, and an Overseas Service Medal. An investigation into the circumstances of Mitchell’s death is being conducted.
