The Berrien Community Foundation is notifying all teachers that it’s now taking applications for a new round of its Golden Acorn Classroom Mini Grants.

BCF Program Manager Susan Matheny tells us the grants offer up to $500 to Berrien County educators and other school professionals for classroom projects.

“In order to help educators and other school staff be creative in the way that they help their students learn and grow during the school year,” Matheny said.

Matheny says the foundation offers up to $10,000 in Golden Acorn grants, spread across two rounds of funding, each year. She’s seen teachers do all sorts of things with the grants.

“I think my favorite grant that we have ever made with the Golden Acorn Classroom Mini Grants is from a math teacher who asked for a — she wanted to purchase rubber band cannons so that they could really teach the lesson on how to calculate trajectory.”

Other examples include Buchanan Community Schools using a Golden Acorn grant to acquire Ukuleles for elementary students and St. Joseph Public Schools using a grant to purchase 3D Printer Filament. Matheny says a lot of teachers also use the grants to acquire books for their classrooms.

Applications for this round of grants are due by October 1. You can learn more right here.
