The city of South Haven, the South Haven Police Department, and South Haven Area Emergency Services will host a ceremony to mark the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks next week.

South Haven Human Resources Director Kim Wise tells us SHAES typically holds a remembrance event each year, but with this being the 25th anniversary, the three partners are putting on something bigger.

“They’re going to do a color guard presentation,” Wise said. “Throughout the rest of the ceremony, we’re going to have various speakers available to talk about their memories of 9/11 and how it changed our nation and ourselves. We’re going to have some bell tolling at certain moments that were significant of that day.”

The South Haven High School Band will also perform. Wise says speakers will include SHAES Director Brandon Hinz, Police Chief Adam DeBoer, and City Manager Kate Hosier. Although it’s now been 25 years since 9/11, the memory of that day is still fresh to her.

“We feel like this is going to be a touching ceremony. Something special that we’re going to have is members of our fire department will be doing a stair climb throughout the ceremony. So if you haven’t seen that, it’s something special to witness.”

South Haven High School is providing bleachers for the firefighters to stage the stair climb.

The ceremony on Friday, September 11 will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Huron Street Pavilion and will conclude with a wreath-laying ceremony around 9:30 a.m. at the Firefighter’s Memorial on the downtown island along Phoenix Street. Everyone’s invited to attend.
