There could soon be a new first at Ford Motor Company.
Ford plans to start making a four-door Mustang that will have the capacity to be a hybrid. Executives told dealers about the plans during a meeting in Las Vegas earlier last week.
The Wall Street Journal reports the car could go on sale before the close of this decade and resembles the current two-door Mustang. Auto analyst John McElroy said there’s nothing wrong with the car having hybrid power.
“Right now, the hybrid segment is the hottest segment in the market. People want it. And, you know, is gas really going to come down? You know, everybody’s looking at four bucks a gallon and going, you know, I need something that gets better fuel economy. So if they do it right, if they have a performance hybrid, you know, one that feels like it’s a performance car, they could sell a lot of them.”
A Ford spokesman said the automaker doesn’t comment on future product speculation.
