The Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety was kept busy over the weekend with multiple fires.
The department says it was dispatched to an active house fire at Pearl and May streets around 12:15 a.m. on Saturday and arrived to find the vacant building in flames. Crews got it under control within about 15 minutes and there were no injuries. The fire is considered suspicious, and anyone with information is asked to contact the Benton Harbor Department of Public Safety.
The department was assisted at the scene by the Benton Township Fire Department, the St. Joseph Department of Public Safety, the Lincoln Township Fire Department, and Medic 1 Ambulance. A total of 17 firefighters and public safety officers were present at the scene.
Then on Sunday, the Benton Harbor Public Safety was called on mutual aid to another house fire, this time at Highland and Crystal in Benton Township. Crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from a one-story apartment house. A mother and son escaped from the fire uninjured.
The Benton Township Fire Department is investigating the cause.
