Keider Montero pitched six scoreless innings, Eduardo Valencia drove in four runs and the Detroit Tigers completed their first season-series sweep ever against an American League opponent with an 11-0 victory over the Athletics. One day after trading ace Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers for three prospects, the Tigers responded with their third straight win to remain within 2 1/2 games of the last wild-card spot in the AL. This marked the fifth time the A’s went winless against an AL foe with it last happening when they went 0-6 against Toronto in 2019.
White Sox 9, Rays 1 – Kay pitches 6 scoreless, Benintendi, Vargas and Pereira homer as White Sox beat Rays 9-1
Anthony Kay tossed 6 1/3 scoreless innings, Andrew Benintendi, Everson Pereira and Miguel Vargas hit home runs and the Chicago White Sox beat the AL-leading Tampa Bay Rays 9-1 on Sunday. The White Sox (58-52), who entered August in first place of the AL Central for the first time since 2021, hold a 3 1/2 game lead over the Minnesota Twins. Kay (8-5) fanned three batters and allowed seven hits while walking one. Duncan Davitt surrendered the only run on his first pitch of the ninth. For the Rays, Griffin Jax (6-9) allowed three runs on four hits while striking out eight.

MLB – Dodgers land Cy Young ace Tarik Skubal in a blockbuster deadline deal
The Los Angeles Dodgers have acquired the biggest prize on the trade deadline market, getting two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch confirmed the deal Saturday night. The two-time defending World Series champions added another big piece to their-star high-priced roster that already big-name players like Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Mookie Betts. The Dodgers are in first place in the NL West and were already the favorites to become the first team to three-peat since the New York Yankees from 1998-2000 before adding Skubal.

The Detroit Tigers said their goodbyes to ace Tarik Skubal and now must turn their focus to an uncertain final two months of the season as they try to make a playoff push without their best player. The Tigers traded the two-time reigning AL Cy Young Award winner to the Los Angeles Dodgers for three minor league prospects. Moving on without Skubal is the ultimate challenge. The ninth-round draft pick in 2018 developed into one of the best pitchers in baseball, winning the Cy Young in 2024 and ’25 and posting a 2.40 ERA over the past three seasons.
MLB – Cubs acquire right-hander Kevin Gausman in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays
The Chicago Cubs have added Kevin Gausman to their rotation, acquiring the veteran right-hander in a trade with the Toronto Blue Jays. The addition of Gausman is likely only the beginning for Chicago as it looks for pitching ahead of Monday’s trade deadline. The Cubs have weathered injuries to several key pitchers on their way to a 63-49 record and the top spot in the NL wild-card standings. The durable Gausman is 5-10 with a 4.38 ERA in 23 starts this year. He pitched at least 174 2/3 innings and made at least 31 starts in each of the previous five seasons.

Rookie Olivia Miles spearheaded an efficient offense with 28 points, Courtney Williams added 27, and the Minnesota Lynx won their 10th straight game with a 108-100 win over the Indiana Fever. There was a rally outside the Target Center that pitted those supporting Fever reserve Sophie Cunningham, who told ESPN last week she believed trans athletes should not play against girls, against those with an opposite feeling. Minnesota coach Cheryl Reeve wore a shirt that read, “Trans kids belong,” and had a pregame conversation with Cunningham. Napheesa Collier had 18 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for the Lynx. Natasha Howard scored 13 points and Kayla McBride 10. The Fever (19-11), who had their five-game winning streak halted, were led by Kelsey Mitchell’s 37 points.

WNBA – Rallies surround Fever-Lynx after Cunningham’s stance on transgender athletes
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A crowd of supporters and critics of Indiana guard Sophie Cunningham’s stance on transgender participation in women’s sports gathered around and inside Target Center as the Fever faced the Lynx in Minnesota. Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve wore a light blue shirt under her jacket that said, “Trans kids belong” as she coached on the bench in her team’s 108-100 win. There were fans in the stands wearing T-shirts that read, “Trans kids belong in sports.” It’s the third straight Fever game that drew a rally after Cunningham recently voiced support for barring transgender girls and women from girls’ and women’s sports in an ESPN article last week.
WPBL -Women’s Pro Baseball League has strong contingent of international players
Ayami Sato wants to learn and teach during the inaugural season of the Women’s Pro Baseball League. She also wants to help establish the WPBL as a viable option for international players. Widely considered the top female pitcher in the world, Sato was one of eight WPBL players born in Japan on the league’s rosters going into its opening weekend. The United States accounted for 33 of the league’s 65 players, followed by Canada with 11, Japan and Mexico with five. Sato pitched three innings for Los Angeles in the WPBL’s first game on Saturday night. She surrendered seven runs, four earned, and 10 hits, but the Queens rallied for a dramatic 10-8 victory over the New York Heights.
NCAA – Judge clarifies NCAA eligibility order, could blunt its impact on new ‘5 for 5’ rule
The judge who granted the right to play another year of college sports to some athletes whose eligibility ran out last school year issued a new order to make clear that does not include football players who signed pro contracts this summer then had a change of heart. That change comes after U.S. District Judge Charlotte Sweeney responded to an NCAA request for clarity about her ruling granting a fifth year to athletes who were not included in the new rule that allows five seasons of eligibility for Division I players.
Golf – Thorbjornsen wins 1st PGA Tour title at the 8th and final Rocket Classic
Michael Thorbjornsen made a 26-foot putt for birdie on his last hole to shoot 7-under 63 and reach 18 under to win his first PGA Tour title by two strokes on Sunday at the Rocket Classic. The 24-year-old Thorbjornsen sealed his spot in the FedEx Cup playoff after rolling into the Motor City No. 69 in the standings. The top 70 advance to the postseason after next week’s Wyndham Championship. Thorbjornsen started Sunday three shots behind leader Davis Riley, whose rough start opened opportunities for the field. Thorbjornsen took advantage, taking the lead with four birdies in a six-hole stretch.
