Eduardo Valencia homered twice and drove in four runs, Gleyber Torres had a home run and five RBIs, and the Detroit Tigers scored in every inning they went to the plate in a 14-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles. Kevin McGonigle reached base five times and scored three runs as the Tigers snapped a three-game losing streak. The Tigers became the 22nd team in major league history to score in every inning they went to the plate during a game and the second this month. The Kansas City Royals did it in a 15-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on July 6. Troy Melton (6-1) allowed three hits and two walks in seven innings.
Yankees 3, White Sox 2 – Gerrit Cole throws 6 scoreless innings for the Yankees in a 3-2 win over the White Sox
Gerrit Cole pitched six shutout innings of four-hit ball and the New York Yankees beat the Chicago White Sox 3-2 for their fifth victory in six games. Anthony Volpe hit an RBI double in the second and scored on Max Schuemann’s two-run double as the Yankees moved within 1 1/2 games of AL East-leading Tampa Bay. Jasson Domínguez had two hits and reached base three times. Chase Meidroth hit a two-run homer off New York closer David Bednar with two outs in the ninth. Bednar then struck out ex-Yankee Everson Pereira for his 22nd save. The White Sox have lost four of five, including two consecutive games to New York. Chicago’s lead over second-place Cleveland in the tight AL Central slipped to 1 1/2 games.
Cubs 10, Cardinals 2 – Cubs race to an early 7-run lead on the way to a 10-2 win over the Cardinals
Seiya Suzuki, Ian Happ and Nico Hoerner drove in two runs apiece and the Chicago Cubs jumped out to a seven-run lead after two innings on the way to a 10-2 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals. Happ punctuated an 11-pitch at-bat with a two-run double to get the Cubs’ scoring started. Pete Crow-Armstrong’s sacrifice fly scored Michael Conforto and Suzuki added a double. Michael Busch and Hoerner added RBI singles to make it 7-0, chasing Cardinals starter Michael McGreevy. McGreevy (4-9) lasted 1 2/3 innings and gave up eight hits and seven earned runs. He walked two and struck out two as the Cardinals lost their third straight game.

MLB – Skubal on schedule to start on Wednesday with trade deadline approaching
Tarik Skubal is still the ace of the Detroit Tigers’ pitching staff as far as manager A.J. Hinch is concerned. Hinch confirmed Tuesday that Skubal is still scheduled to start on Wednesday against the Baltimore Orioles. With the Tigers at 50-57 and the Aug. 3 trade deadline quickly approaching, it seemed possible that the Tigers would rest Skubal to avoid a possible injury heading into the trade deadline. The two-time defending American League Cy Young Award winner is 4-3 with a 2.70 ERA and 65 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings since returning from experimental elbow surgery in just six weeks. Skubal has made it clear he wants to finish the season with the Tigers and lead them to a third straight postseason berth.

Fever 105, Storm 95 – Clark and Mitchell lead Fever to their 4th straight victory, 105-95 over the Storm
Caitlin Clark scored 32 points, Kelsey Mitchell added 28 and the Indiana Fever won their fourth straight game, beating the Seattle Storm 105-95. Clark went 9 for 14 with four 3-pointers, made all 10 of her free throws and added seven assists. Mitchell has scored 20-plus points for a franchise-record 12th straight game, tied for the third-longest streak in league history. The Fever shot 26 for 26 from the line — one off the league record for most makes without a miss. Natisha Hiedeman sank six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 33 for Seattle (6-24).
NCAA – No Big Ten championship game if college football moves to a 24-team playoff
The Big Ten would do away with its championship game if college football adopts a 24-team playoff. Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti says that’s a worthwhile sacrifice to get his preferred postseason format. Pettiti mentioned this possibility back in May as he stepped up his push to expand the current 12-team playoff to 24. He made the point clear Tuesday by conceding a 24-team playoff would mean no Big Ten championship game. The bid to expand the playoff to 24 teams also has the support of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big 12 and Notre Dame. The Southeastern Conference remains a holdout.
NCAA – Notre Dame, Ohio State announce lucrative jersey patch sponsorship deals
Notre Dame and Ohio State reached lucrative jersey patch sponsorship deals totaling around $30 million as schools search for ways to cash in on the revenue-sharing era. Ohio State announced a multiyear jersey patch sponsorship deal with JPMorgan Chase. Terms of the deal were not released, but multiple outlets reported it at $17 million annually. Notre Dame also announced a jersey patch deal with SoFi Technologies worth $18 million to $20 million, according to multiple outlets. A sprawling $2.8 billion House antitrust settlement approved by a federal judge last month cleared the way for schools to directly pay players through licensing deals, and they’re already cashing in.
NCAA – College NIL bill includes $25 million ‘retention pool’ but is OK for Big Ten, SEC?
A reworked Senate bill aims to regulate college sports by more than doubling the money schools can share with players. The Protect College Sports Act proposes up to $25 million for a “retention” pool to pay athletes to stay on rosters. This is in addition to the $21.3 million schools are allowed to spend this season. The House settlement calls for 22% of certain revenues to be shared with athletes. The bill’s future in the Senate remains uncertain.
NFL – 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan takes blame for the crash that game him a concussion
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan took the blame for the car crash that left him with a concussion and other injuries, saying he took his eyes off the road to reach for his fallen cell phone before hitting another vehicle. Shanahan crashed into a 21-year-old woman driving in the other direction in Palo Alto on July 14 and was left with a concussion, broken ribs, a broken nose and broken left hand and stitches for a large cut above his right eye. Shanahan was briefly hospitalized following the crash and hasn’t been able to coach the team at the start of training camp.
NFL – Browns’ Ward becomes NFL’s highest-paid DB with 2-year, $62.2 million extension,
Denzel Ward has agreed to a two-year extension with the Cleveland Browns that will make him the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The five-time Pro Brown cornerback will sign a two-year extension worth $62.2 million — including $52.3 million guaranteed, the person told the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal had not been publicly announced. The $31.1 million average surpasses the $31 million average when Trent McDuffie signed a four-year, $124 million contract with the Los Angeles Rams after being traded by Kansas City in March. The 29-year old Ward had two years remaining on a five-year, $100 million contract he signed in 2022.
NFL – Rodgers says there’s ‘zero debate’ 2026 will be his final season
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says there’s “zero debate” that this season will be his last. The four-time MVP’s status beyond 2026 is one of the few certainties for the Steelers as training camp begins. They have a new head coach, Mike McCarthy, who brings fresh ideas to the team. The team will practice earlier in the day and tackling will be limited. Pittsburgh will begin camp with defensive backs Joey Porter Jr. and Jalen Ramsey on the physically unable to perform list.
