Tigers 6, Rangers 3 – Riley Greene homers and triples for 4 RBIs as Tigers top Rangers 6-3
Riley Greene homered, tripled and drove in four runs for the Detroit Tigers in a 6-3 win over the Texas Rangers. Greene sent a two-run home run high to right field in the fourth inning and hit a two-run triple into the left-field corner during a four-run fifth inning. Casey Mize (4-5) allowed two runs on five hits in 6 2/3 innings as the Tigers won the series rubber game to finish a 5-1 road trip. Kenley Jansen pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save in 14 chances. Two of Texas’ runs came on solo homers — Jake Burger in the third inning and Ezequiel Duran in the eighth.
White Sox 7, Guardians 6 – Colson Montgomery homers as White Sox outlast Guardians 7-6
Colson Montgomery hit a two-run homer and Kyle Teel and Tristan Peters added solo shots as the Chicago White Sox beat the Cleveland Guardians 7-6 to split a four-game series between the AL Central’s top teams. The win moved the White Sox back into first place by one game. Gabriel Arias belted a three-run homer for the Guardians, who won the first two games on walk-offs. The finale was delayed by rain and unplayable conditions on the outfield warning track. Chicago rookie Sam Antonacci drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth and made a nice running catch in the eighth to stifle a Cleveland threat.
Cubs 6, Cardinals 4 – Cubs beat the Cardinals 6-4, scoring 4 runs in the sixth to avoid a series sweep
Nico Hoerner drove in two runs, Pete Crow-Armstrong had two hits, and the Chicago Cubs rallied for four runs in the sixth inning against a sloppy St. Louis defense to top the Cardinals 6-4 to avoid a series sweep. Alex Bregman doubled in a run, pinch-hitter Pedro Ramirez had an RBI and the Cubs posted two unearned runs to win for the 10th time in their last 13 games. St. Louis’ Jordan Walker hit his 20th homer, a three-run shot in the sixth, then drove in a fourth run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth, to boost his RBI total to 67.

MLB – Munetaka Murakami sent on rehab stint, could rejoin Chicago before All-Star break
White Sox rookie first baseman Munetaka Murakami will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte. It’s his final step before rejoining Chicago’s lineup after being out with a right hamstring injury. Murakami has been sidelines since suffering a Grade 2 strain on May 29, when he got hurt trying to beat out a double play grounder. At the time of his injury, Murakami was tied for the AL lead in homers and was first in runs. Manager Will Venable said Murakami will leave to play with the Knights beginning Monday and, if all goes well, he could be back before the All-Star break.

Fever 84, Aces 68 – Fever, without Caitlin Clark, beat A’ja Wilson-less Aces 84-68
Kelsey Mitchell scored 27 points, Aliyah Boston totaled 18 points and 10 rebounds and Indiana beat the Aces for the first time in Las Vegas 84-68 with a couple of All-Stars sidelined. Las Vegas played without A’ja Wilson, the four-time league MVP who has missed three straight games with an ankle injury, and Indiana’s Caitlin Clark was held out for a third game as she recovers from a back injury. Both players are both expected back soon. Jackie Young had 15 points for Las Vegas (15-6) in its lowest-scoring game of the season. Indiana led 68-55 after three quarters and maintained a double-digit lead in the fourth.

Erling Haaland headed in the go-ahead goal in the 79th minute and scored again before the end of regulation time, carrying Norway into the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time with a 2-1 win over Brazil that showcased the young striker on soccer’s biggest stage. Haaland, with two goals, tied Lionel Messi for the most in the tournament with seven each. Brazil’s streak of reaching the quarterfinals ended at eight, with its first round-of-16 exit since 1990. Norway next faces England with a spot in the semifinals at stake.
ENG 3, MEX 2 – England hands Mexico its first World Cup loss at Estadio Azteca, winning 3-2 to quarterfinals
Jude Bellingham scored two goals 98 seconds apart, Harry Kane converted a penalty when England was down to 10 men, and England handed Mexico its first World Cup loss at Estadio Azteca, a wild 3-2 victory to reach the quarterfinals. England moves on to face Norway on Saturday in Miami Gardens, Florida, for a spot in the semifinals. Bellingham stunned the crowd of more than 80,000 at a venue where Mexico was unbeaten in 10 World Cup matches, including three this tournament, when he scored on a header in the 36th minute and again in the 38th on a pass from Kane.
FIFA – FIFA lifts US star Balogun’s red card suspension after Trump calls Infantino
U.S. President Donald Trump intervened on behalf of American star forward Folarin Balogun, whose suspension was lifted in a decision that allows him to play in a World Cup match against Belgium on Monday. Balogun, the American leader with three goals, received a red card for stepping awkwardly on the right ankle of Tarik Muharemović of Bosnia-Herzegovina in a 2-0 round of 32 win on Wednesday. A red card triggers an automatic one-game suspension. FIFA announced Sunday that the suspension had been lifted, triggering praise from Trump and outrage from Belgium’s team.
FIFA – US faces Belgium, hoping for 1st back-to-back knockout wins and Quarterfinal spot
The United States is aiming for back-to-back World Cup knockout wins for the first time. Coach Mauricio Pochettino expects a full lineup Monday against Belgium. The U.S. last faced Belgium at the World Cup in 2014, losing 2-1 in extra time. A quarterfinal spot against Spain or Portugal is at stake. Belgium advanced by overcoming Senegal 3-2 in extra time. The U.S. ended a 10-game losing streak to European teams by beating Bosnia-Herzegovina 2-0 in the round of 16. Folarin Balogun is eligible to play after his suspension was lifted. A sellout crowd is expected at Lumen Field.
Tennis – Naomi Osaka overpowers Aryna Sabalenka to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals
Naomi Osaka outslugged top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka 6-2, 7-6 (2) to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals for the first time. Sabalenka had beaten Osaka in all three of her previous matches with Osaka this year including at the same stage of the French Open last month. But this time Sabalenka couldn’t handle Osaka’s pace and flat groundstrokes It was Osaka’s first win over a No. 1 player since beating Ash Barty in Beijing in 2019. That was before Osaka took a breaks from the tour to manage her mental health in 2021 and for maternity leave that resulted in her missing all of 2023. Coco Gauff, Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner also won.
Tennis – Djokovic breaks another Federer record despite ‘meltdowns’ on Centre Court
After all the records Novak Djokovic has broken, the latest one left him rather unimpressed — even though he surpassed his great rival Roger Federer. Djokovic set a men’s record for most match wins at Wimbledon after overcoming a surprisingly tough challenge from 132nd-ranked qualifier Roman Safiullin on Sunday to reach the quarterfinals. It was his 106th match victory at the All England Club. That puts him one ahead of Federer atop the all-time list for men, although he still trails Martina Navratilova’s 120 match wins. Djokovic is also trying to match Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles, so the mark for match wins was “not on my priority list,” he said. He added: "That’s really quite insignificant to me at the moment.”
NASCAR – Briscoe holds off Bell in NASCAR’s return to Chicagoland Speedway
Chase Briscoe held off Christopher Bell in NASCAR’s return to Chicagoland Speedway, racing to his first Cup Series victory of the season. Briscoe was followed closely by Bell in the final laps on the 1.5-mile oval about 50 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. But Bell was unable to run down his Joe Gibbs Racing teammate. The 31-year-old Briscoe, an Indiana native, celebrated his sixth career win with a burnout before standing in the window of his car and waving to the sellout crowd. It was Bell’s fourth runner-up finish this season. He raced with a splint on his arm as he continues his recovery after breaking his left wrist in a crash at Michigan on June 7.
Golf – Chris Gotterup wins John Deere Classic with a 62 and late help from Ben Kohles
Chris Gotterup has won the John Deere Classic for his fourth PGA Tour title in the last 12 months. Gotterup shot a 62 in the final round at the TPC Deere Run. That helped him make up a five-shot deficit. And then he needed some help at the end. Ben Kohles was tied for the lead with Gotterup and in the middle of the 18th fairway. But he pulled his 8-iron into the water and then missed a short putt and took double bogey. Max Homa wound up in second for his best finish in more than three years.
