Colt Keith had three home runs and six RBIs as the Detroit Tigers beat the Houston Astros 9-3. Kevin McGonigle and Spencer Torkelson also homered in an 11-hit game for Detroit. McGonigle homered in the second inning for a 2-0 lead before Keith drilled his first homer of the night, a two-run shot in the third. Torkelson followed with his 12th home run of the season to put the Tigers up 5-0. Kyle Finnegan earned the win in relief. Isaac Paredes and Jose Altuve connected on back-to-back homers in the third to pull the Astros to 5-3, but that was all Houston mustered offensively. Kai-Wei Teng gave up five runs and six hits in 3 1/3 innings. He struck out nine.
Cubs 5, Rockies 4 – Pete Crow-Armstrong hits for the cycle as the Cubs walk off the Rockies, 5-4
Pete Crow-Armstrong became the first major league player to hit for the cycle this season as the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Chicago trailed 4-3 in the ninth inning before Pedro Ramírez hit an RBI single off Seth Halvorsen with the bases loaded and nobody out. Matt Shaw then walked on five pitches to force home the winning run. Cole Carrigg’s three-run homer in the eighth gave Colorado a 4-2 lead. Crow-Armstrong’s sacrifice fly in the bottom half pulled Chicago within one. Crow-Armstrong extended his on-base streak to 19 games with his second leadoff homer in three games. He tripled in the third, doubled in the fifth and singled in the seventh for the 13th cycle in Cubs history and second since 1993.

MLB – Tigers’ Colt Keith rediscovers power stroke with 3-homer game in Houston
HOUSTON (AP) — Colt Keith has rediscovered his home run swing in Houston, swatting three round-trippers to power the Detroit Tigers to a 9-3 victory over the Astros. Keith, who bats from the left side, hit a towering, two-out, two-run shot to right-center in the third inning, a two-run drive down the right-field line in the seventh and an opposite-field solo homer in the ninth over the 19-foot left-field wall at Houston’s Daikin Park. The 24-year-old Keith hit 13 home runs in each of his previous two major league seasons, but had just one this year before Monday night’s power display.

Michigan State has lost its president and athletic director weeks apart and now faces a leadership crisis. President Kevin M. Guskiewicz announced he’d be leaving for Clemson at the end of May. Athletic director J Batt was hired away by Kentucky on Monday. Longtime Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo lamented that Guskiewicz and Batt decided to leave. Meanwhile, Mark Hollis, the school’s former athletic director who brought the Spartans to new heights before a fall from public esteem during the Larry Nassar case, told The Associated Press he would want to return to his alma mater.
NCAAFB – Sorsby won’t play for Texas Tech after unprecedented legal fight
Transfer quarterback Brendan Sorsby will not play for Texas Tech this fall. He is instead planning to enter the NFL supplemental draft. That will end an unprecedented legal fight over the college eligibility of a player who had acknowledged betting on college and pro sports, including some wagers on his own team while a freshman at Indiana four years ago. The decision by Sorsby came exactly one week before the deadline to apply for the NFL supplemental draft. It was also on the same day the NCAA and Big 12 Conference had filings in different courts challenging a temporary injunction that cleared the way for Sorsby to play despite being declared ineligible after he acknowledged making thousands of bets worth at least $90,000 while in college.
NBA – Bulls finalizing hire of Tiago Splitter as coach, AP source says
A person familiar with the decision says the Chicago Bulls are finalizing a deal to hire Portland Trail Blazers interim coach Tiago Splitter as their next head coach. The 41-year-old Splitter joined Chauncey Billups’ staff in Portland last June. He was elevated from assistant to interim coach when Billups was arrested in October in a takedown of a sprawling gambling operation. Splitter coached Portland to a 42-40 record and a five-game loss to San Antonio in the first round of the playoffs. He would replace Billy Donovan, who resigned after six seasons. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the team didn’t announce the deal with Splitter, which was first reported by ESPN.

FIFA – Iran coach says team ordered out of US right after 2-2 draw with New Zealand
The coach of Iran’s World Cup team says it was ordered to leave the U.S. and return to its training base in Mexico only a few hours after opening its politically charged tournament by playing to a 2-2 draw with New Zealand. Coach Amir Ghalenoei didn’t say who ordered the Iranians to leave earlier than planned. The team had expected to spend the night in California. The Iranians’ World Cup cycle has been in upheaval since the U.S. and Israel began a war against Iran on Feb. 28.
FIFA – Cape Verde holds Spain to a surprising 0-0 draw in the country’s World Cup debut
Tiny Cape Verde pulled off a stunning result in its World Cup debut by holding heavily favored Spain scoreless in a 0-0 draw. An impressive performance by 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha helped Cape Verde deny a victory by one of the favorites to win the tournament. The result was the biggest shock of the World Cup so far. And it might have been even better for Cape Verde. Diney Borges had a late chance to score, but saw his header saved by Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon.
