Lake Michigan College is planning a series of summer gardening classes to help home gardeners tackle common growing challenges throughout the season.
LMC Wine and Viticulture Program Director Tim Godfrey tells us the sessions at the college’s South Haven campus will be held in June, July, and August to cover the whole summer.
“The idea is that over the course of the three sessions, you’ll see very different evolutions of the garden, and therefore, you’ll see different potential problems or different issues with the garden, different pests, different challenges related to the growing season,” Godfrey said. “So I actually think the most valuable thing would be to, if you’re an avid gardener, come to all three of them.”
Godfrey says the classes will be led by Michigan State University Extension educator Cheyenne Sloan and focus on managing pests, diseases, weeds, and nutrient issues in a variety of garden crops.
“The whole point of the course is to kind of observe what’s happening in our quote-unquote garden and see how that applies to what others might be seeing in their garden.”
Godfrey says the sessions are being held in South Haven because that’s the location of the college’s hoop house, a greenhouse opened to serve as a hub for hands-on learning, sustainability, and agricultural innovation.
The summer sessions will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on June 25, July 16, and August 6, and are $15 each.
