Angels 7, Tigers 1 – Grayson Rodriguez pitches 5 strong innings as Angels stay hot with 7-1 win over Tigers
Grayson Rodriguez pitched five strong innings as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers 7-1 for their fifth victory in six games. The Angels won back-to-back series for the first time this season, sweeping Texas at home before winning two of three in Detroit. Detroit has gone 4-18 since May 4, losing seven straight series. Rodriguez allowed one run on two hits and two walks in five innings. He struck out five. Jack Flaherty gave up three runs on six hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings while striking out nine.
Cubs 7, Pirates 2 – Happ homers again and Skenes loses his 3rd straight start as the Cubs sink the Pirates 7-2
Ian Happ homered for the second consecutive game and the Chicago Cubs handed Paul Skenes his third straight loss with a 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. The win came one night after the Cubs ended a 10-game losing streak. Happ hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the seventh inning of that game. Happ had three hits on Thursday, including a two-run homer in the eighth that pushed the Cubs’ lead to 5-2. Seiya Suzuki had two hits and two RBIs for Chicago. Skenes lost his third straight start despite striking out 10 in 5 1/3 innings. Only one of the three runs against the 2025 NL Cy Young Award winner was earned.
White Sox 6, Twins 2 – Davis Martin wins 6th straight decision and White Sox cruise to a 6-2 win over Twins
Davis Martin allowed one run on two hits over six innings to win his sixth straight decision as the Chicago White Sox cruised to a 6-2 win over the Minnesota Twins. Tristan Peters had three hits for the White Sox, who took three of four from the Twins and have won 12 of their past 18 games. Martin struck out five and walked two to become the first White Sox pitcher to win eight of his first 11 starts since Lucas Giolito in 2019.

MLB – MLB owners propose a salary cap for the first time since baseball’s 1994-95 strike
Major League Baseball owners made their long-expected salary cap proposal to the players’ association on Thursday, a system the union has vowed never to accept, setting the sides on course for a confrontation that threatens the 2027 season and perhaps beyond. Baseball owners haven’t proposed a firm cap since 1994. Their effort prompted a 7 1/2-month strike that forced the cancellation of the World Series for the first time in 90 years. The proposal would cap spending in 2027 at $245.3 million, with a salary floor of $171.2 million.

Spurs 118, Thunder 91 – Wembanyama was all business in Game 6 of West finals.
Victor Wembanyama looked different in Game 6. There was the long robe that the San Antonio star wore to his home arena on Thursday night, done to celebrate an Islamic holiday but also reminding some of his look last summer at a Shaolin temple. And on the court, he was back to his dominant self as well. Facing an elimination game for the first time in his career, Wembanyama had 28 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and two assists, on 10-for-21 shooting in 28 minutes, leading the Spurs past the Oklahoma City Thunder 118-91 and sending the West finals to Game 7.
NBA – NBA’s board of governors passes anti-tanking changes to draft lottery
The NBA has approved sweeping changes to the draft lottery that will strip the teams with the worst records from receiving the best odds of winning the No. 1 pick. The changes were approved Thursday in large part to crack down on tanking. A vote by the league’s Board of Governors made the plan official for the next three seasons. The plan will be evaluated again before 2030. Starting with next year’s lottery, the 16 participating teams will all get somewhere between one and three lottery balls.

NHL – Claude Lemieux, the feisty four-time Stanley Cup champion, dies at 60
Four-time Stanley Cup champion Claude Lemieux has died after taking his own life, according to authorities. He was 60. The Palm Beach County Sherriff’s Office said deputies responded just after 3 a.m. to a suicide call at a furniture store showroom in Lake Park, Florida. The sheriff’s office said the victim was believed to be Lemieux. The NHL Alumni Association announced Lemieux’s death in a post on social media. Lemieux was the Montreal Canadiens’ torch bearer prior to Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final on Monday night. He won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP with New Jersey in 1995. Darren McCarty, a truculent member of the Red Wings who had multiple fights with Lemieux, posted a broken heart emoji on social media and heard the news from Draper. McCarty said Lemieux the person was totally different than the player, and the two later met for an interview with smiles about their clashes.
PWHL – Manon Rheaume hires Josh Sciba as coach of the PWHL’s Detroit expansion team
Josh Sciba has been named as the coach for the PWHL’s expansion team in Detroit. It’s the first big hire by women’s hockey pioneer Manon Rheaume, who became Detroit’s general manager earlier this month. Sciba was an assistant with the PWHL’s New York Sirens and on the U.S. national team that won gold at the Milan Cortina Olympics. He was the women’s hockey coach at Union College from 2016-24 before moving into the professional ranks. Rheaume, who played in a pair of NHL preseason games with the Tampa Bay Lightning in the early 1990s, has been in hockey operations with the Los Angeles Kings since 2022.

Veronica Burton had 25 points, six rebounds and a career-best five blocked shots, Gabby Williams added 19 points, six rebounds and six assists, and the Golden State Valkyries beat Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever 90-88. Clark turned the ball over with 1:32 left and her team trailing by three then again with 1:06 to go before missing a 3 with 40 seconds remaining. Clark finished with 16 points, six assists and four rebounds but struggled to find a shooting groove — she was 3 for 12 — at Chase Center again as Indiana had its three-game winning streak snapped.

NFL – Bears coach Ben Johnson says he is ‘buying Luther Burden stock’ going into season
Luther Burden was hungry when he joined the Chicago Bears. A year later, not much has changed on that front. He has somewhere he wants to go, and he is determined to reach that level. Burden says he wants to prove that he is “that guy.” The Bears are believers, and they showed just how much they think of Burden’s potential when they traded veteran receiver DJ Moore to Buffalo in March. With Moore gone, the 22-year-old Burden is expected to take on a more prominent role alongside fellow receiver Rome Odunze and second-year tight end Colston Loveland.
Tennis –No. 1 Jannik Sinner struggles with dizziness during heat wave in 2nd-round loss
Top-ranked Jannik Sinner is out in the French Open second round. Sinner struggled with dizziness and wasted a chance to serve for the match in a 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1 loss to 56th-ranked opponent Juan Manuel Cerundolo. Sinner was on a 30-match winning streak and was an overwhelming favorite to complete a career Grand Slam. Sinner bent over on the clay court in apparent exhaustion multiple times. He attempted to cool himself with a hand-held fan on changeovers and put bags of ice around his neck. The temperature rose to 32 C (90 F).
