A Mexican national has been extradited to the U.S. to face charges in a large drug trafficking conspiracy that reached into Southwest Michigan, including Berrien and Van Buren counties.

Federal prosecutors say the operation involved inmates and former inmates of the Michigan Department of Corrections who arranged for methamphetamine and heroin to be brought in from Mexico and distributed across 11 counties. Among those affected were Berrien and Van Buren counties, making them part of the broader west Michigan drug network.

Eight people have already been convicted in connection to the scheme. U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Timothy VerHey says the extradited suspect, 37-year-old Adrian Weyman-Urbina, played a role in establishing and continuing the distribution network.

In all, VerHey says the conspiracy spanned eleven counties in Michigan, including Alger, Luce, Allegan, Berrien, Branch, Grand Traverse, Ingham, Kent, Muskegon, Ottawa, and Van Buren.

VerHey added the case is part of a larger federal initiative targeting drug trafficking organizations, with several law enforcement agencies involved in the investigation. You can learn more right here.
