Both of Southwest Michigan’s members of the U.S. House are welcoming the end of the federal government shutdown.
Seven Democrats and one independent this week joined with Republicans in the Senate to approve a continuing spending resolution to end the longest shutdown in history. The House approved the continuing resolution Wednesday, sending it to the president.
Congressman Tim Walberg says it’s about time things get back to normal.
“I was proud to vote for this funding extension, even as I did on September 19, that allows us to return to regular order, continue the appropriations process, and get back to delivering real results for the American people,” Walberg said. “This pointless government shutdown is finally coming to an end.”
Congressman Bill Huizenga issued a statement Wednesday, saying the shutdown was “totally avoidable and unnecessary.” He said he hopes Democrats in Washington “take a long hard look in the mirror.”
Democrats had blocked Senate approval of the continuing resolution as they sought the reinstatement of healthcare tax credits.
