The release of Michigan native and Marine Corps veteran Paul Whelan from a Russian prison is being welcomed by leaders across Michigan.

The Biden administration announced a prisoner exchange with Russia on Thursday, also bringing home imprisoned journalist Evan Gershkovich and several others.

Congressman Tim Walberg issued a statement, saying he’s “overjoyed” to learn Whelan and the others are coming home. He says Whelan’s parents were constituents of his, and they spent “six agonizing years wondering if they’d ever get to see their son again.” However, Walberg adds, “we must be careful not to establish a new norm by accepting when our adversaries conflate innocent civilians with real criminals.”

Senator Gary Peters issued a statement, saying he’s worked for years to try to secure Whelan’s release, adding he’s “beyond relieved that today marks the end of this unimaginable nightmare for Paul and his loved ones.”

Senator Debbie Stabenow says, “Wonderful news today! After more than five years, Paul Whelan is coming home.” She thanked the Biden administration for making it happen.

Finally, Governor Gretchen Whitmer says, “It’s been five long years, and I know Paul’s family and every Michigander is excited to welcome him with open arms and lots of love.”
