The city of Dowagiac has been awarded a $600,000 water grant from the state.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy says a total of $27.1 million is going out to communities throughout the state as part of this latest round of MI Clean Water grants. Eight water systems received grants for work identifying or verifying lead service lines in preparation for their replacement, and Dowagiac is on that list with its $600,000.
The state has been requiring communities throughout to locate and replace a certain number of old lead water lines each year. Dowagiac’s grant will help the city do that.
The MI Clean Water Plan grants through the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund aim to help communities upgrade aging infrastructure, ensure healthy drinking water, and protect Michigan’s environment.
Governor Gretchen Whitmer, the Michigan Legislature, and federal agencies have ramped up funding for aging water infrastructure to help ensure those water systems continue to protect public health and the environment.
