The Red Cross of Southwest Michigan has been working with residents displaced this week after a fire at the Briarwood Apartment complex in Benton Township. The Red Cross tells us the organization was on the scene Tuesday following the fire and made contact with all affected residents, who number more than 30. 24 units were damaged in the blaze, and the Red Cross set up a shelter for those with no other place to go. However, no residents took them up on the offer, and the shelter has now been closed. The Red Cross is in contact with the apartment management and can help those in need with financial assistance, access to necessities like eyeglasses, and more. Meanwhile, Harbor Country Mission in Bridgman has also reached out to those affected and offered them bedding, mattresses, beds, and clothing, all for free. It’s invited all Briarwood residents in need to come by during business hours, which are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
