Huizenga calls on Canada to do more for Great Lakes restoration

Congressman Bill Huizenga and some colleagues are calling on Canada to do more to help protect the Great Lakes. Huizenga tells us they’ve sent a letter to President Joe Biden asking him to bring up Great Lakes funding to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau while visiting him this week. Huizenga says the U.S. contribution to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is far greater than Canada’s.

“We are putting in over $400 million per year into that program,” Huizenga said. “Canada has been doing just under $33 million over the last five years, not even annually. So, we put a bipartisan letter together.”

Huizenga says Canada doesn’t have to contribute as much as the United States to Great Lakes issues, but it should step up more to meet its joint responsibility. He says he spoke with Secretary of State Anthony Blinken this week and raised the same issue ahead of Biden’s trip. Huizenga is the co-chair of the Great Lakes Task Force.
