Can summer be far off? The horses are starting to return to Mackinac Island after most of them spent the winter in Pickford in the Upper Peninsula. Mackinac Island Tourism’s Steph Castelein says the season kicks off in May and it’s the year of anniversaries.

“We have the 75th annual Lilac Festival. So that’s a big 10-day festival in June with the wonderful lilac shrubs on the island. It’s the 125th anniversary of the vehicle ban. Horseless carriages were banned 125 years ago, and then Pink Pony is celebrating 75 years as well.”

Castelein says Mackinac Island’s resorts, hotels and other properties have been working on renovations, painting and carpet updates. She says the Grand Hotel is introducing the Mackinac Island Pizza Company, a new BMX track, miniature golf and a new greenhouse.
