Leon Massey Sr., 91, passed on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, peacefully in his home.

Born July 09, 1931, in Fort Deposit, Alabama to Tim and Evelyn (Sellers) Massey, Leon was both the youngest and last surviving sibling.

A veteran, Leon was an Army private in the Korean War, before leaving Alabama to provide a better life for his wife and children. After deciding to call Benton Harbor, Michigan home, Leon worked at both Auto Specialties for 15 years and the Benton Harbor/St. Joseph Waste Water Treatment Plant for 10 years. He retired in 1995, but he was never one to be still, providing lawn services to neighbors and friends who needed his help. A devout Baptist and faithful servant of the Lord, Leon served as a Deacon, Usher Board Member, and sang in the Male Gospel Chorus at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church in Benton Harbor, MI.

Leon was married to Rosa Grey Hildreth until she preceded him in death on May 15, 2000. Leon leaves to embrace his memory 8 children: Leroy (Shelia) Daniels (Birmingham, AL), Rodney (Helen) Massey (St. Joseph, MI), Leon (Cindy) Massey Jr. (Detroit, MI), Alfonso (Jean) Pollard (Birmingham, AL), Vernessia (James) Callahan (Atlanta, GA), Brenda (Ricky) Clark (Niles, MI), Glenda Massey (Benton Harbor, MI), Leontis (Donna) Massey (Atlanta, GA); 19 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, Godson Sam (Delores) Miller (Benton Harbor, MI), God Daughter Lois Clay (Benton Harbor, MI) and Godson Jimmy (Diane) Young (Benton Harbor, MI).

Leon was a kind, patient, hardworking, and loving father and husband. Leon enjoyed watching football, baseball, basketball, and The Young and the Restless. Leon Massey wanted to be a shining example for his grandsons, and later in life, went back to school to complete his high school education.

Leon will surely be missed.

The Massey Family wishes to extend our deepest gratitude to Leon’s Caring Circle Team Members: Nurses (Alicia, Amy, Anne, Charmaine), CNA’s (Wanda, Ashley, Jeanette, LaTonya), Visitor (Tim Oleary), and Social Worker (Samantha)

A special thank you and gratitude to our beloved sister, Glenda Massey (affectionately known to some as Aunt Dean), for her faithful devoted service in the caring of our Dad to the end.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Robbins Brothers Funeral  Home, Benton Harbor.
