St. Joseph township residents will once again have a chance to voice their opinion on a proposed development at the Nye’s Apple Barn Property.

A public hearing on the issue has been rescheduled for Tuesday, February 14 at 6:30 p.m. at the St. Joseph Charter Township Hall, 3000 Washington Avenue, St Joseph. A public hearing was originally set for January, but was postponed due to a clerical error.

Last October, plans for the development were put on hold due to issues with the application. The updated plans include multi-family housing units, two restaurants, a gas station and a bank – all of which would sit on the 12-acre property at 3151 Niles Road, just off I-94, Exit 27.

Dozens of township residents voiced strong opposition to the proposed development, and indications are they plan to do it again. Organizers behind a change.org petition with over 600 signatures have re-launched their opposition in a social media post on Monday.

“While I understand the desire to commercialize this property for a big profit, and even some desire to add additional housing or amenities to the area,” said petition organizer Brandon Crowder. “Such development would be injurious and detrimental to not just adjacent neighborhoods, but every single person who travels Niles Avenue along this key trunk line roadway.”
