The city of St. Joseph is seeking bonds to pay for infrastructure projects in the coming year. At a Monday meeting, city commissioners voted to publish a notice of intent to issue water system and sewer system bonds for a total of up to $23 million. City Manager John Hodgson told us the work will be at the water treatment plant and under streets.

“The water project would include replacing two large clarifiers at the water plant,” Hodgson said. “It would also include lead service line replacements and also water service main replacements such as on Upton Drive. The sewer side would be infrastructure like the Upton Drive project.”

The sewer bonds are related to the Upton Drive reconstruction project. Although the commission could seek up to $23 million in bonds, Hodgson noted the work is expected to cost less than that, and around $2.3 million would be forgiven by the state. The city’s intent is to seek the funds through the state’s Drinking Water Revolving Fund program. The city could proceed with securing the funding 45 days after publishing its intent.
