Booker scored 25 points in the first half and had 26 more in a sublime third quarter. After a contested 3-pointer splashed through the net, “MVP! MVP!” chants broke out across Footprint Arena, and the 26-year-old is certainly making an early season case. The three-time All-Star had a steal late in the third before sprinting downcourt and flushing home a dunk for his 50th and 51st points. He added six assists and four rebounds. NFL – Fields’ status for Bears still in question with Packers next
Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields’ status for Sunday’s game against Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers remains in question because of an injury to his nonthrowing shoulder. Fields practiced Wednesday on a limited basis after missing last week’s loss at the New York Jets. He threw lightly on the field prior to that game but did not play. Fields separated his left shoulder and suffered some ligament damage in the AC joint when he was tackled on a designed run late in Chicago’s loss at Atlanta two weeks ago. He participated in practice on a limited basis leading up to the game at New York.

NCAAFB – AP source: Rose Bowl clears way for 12-team CFP in 2024
Rose Bowl game organizers have cleared the way for the College Football Playoff to expand to 12 teams starting in the 2024 season. They’ve told CFP officials they are willing to alter agreements for the first two years of the larger playoff. A person with knowledge of the discussions between game organizers and CFP officials told The Associated Press that the Rose Bowl is prepared to be flexible and wants to continue to be part of the College Football Playoff beyond 2025. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the presidents and chancellors who oversee the playoff still needed to give final approval on expansion plans.

NCAAWSOC – Athlete flipped the bird, lost scholarship, now wins appeal
A federal appeals court has reinstated a lawsuit brought by a former University of Connecticut women’s soccer player who lost her scholarship after giving the middle finger to a television camera. Three judges on the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York City ruled Wednesday that Noriana Radwan presented sufficient evidence to go to trial on her claim that she was punished more harshly than male athletes who violated conduct rules. A lower court judge dismissed Radwan’s lawsuit in 2020. The case returns to the federal trial court. UConn officials say they’re confident they will prevail in court.

MLB – Secure with 5-year deal, Clark pushes to make MLBPA stronger
Tony Clark has never had more clout as executive director of the Major League Baseball Players Association. The 50-year-old helped the union navigate a tumultuous stretch that included a pandemic-shortened 2020 season and a new labor deal in March that not only saved a full 162-game season but also was viewed as at least a modest win for the players and their pocketbooks. Now, there’s a relative calm during a baseball offseason that hasn’t been seen for a few years. Clark says there’s plenty of work to be done, including helping more than 5,000 new union members who play at the minor league level.

FIFA – 2022 FIFA World Cup – Qatar
Yesterday
Australia 1, Denmark 0
Tunisia 1, France 0
Argentina 2, Poland 0
Mexico 2, Saudi Arabia 1

Australia 1, Denmark 0 – Australia may have new Golden Generation at World Cup
Australia has advanced to the round of 16 at the World Cup by beating Denmark 1-0 on Mathew Leckie’s 60th-minute goal. It is Australia’s first time in the knockout stage since 2006. That was the only other time they advanced out of the group stage. Leckie took a pass just around the center circle and moved in and around a defender. He eventually hit a left-footed shot that beat Denmark goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. Australia finished with 6 points in Group D.

Tunisia 1, France 0 – France loses to Tunisia 1-0 but still wins World Cup group
Defending champion France won its World Cup group despite losing to Tunisia 1-0. Wahbi Khazri scored in the 58th minute to give the Tunisians the victory but it wasn’t enough to get them into the round of 16. Australia beat Denmark 1-0 in other Group D game and finished second on goal difference. Khazri ran at the heart of the French defense and beat two players before poking the ball into the bottom corner. It was Tunisia’s third victory at a World Cup. France forward Antoine Griezmann thought he had evened the score in the eighth minute of stoppage time but he was ruled offside following a video review.

Argentina 2, Poland 0 – Messi and Argentina advance at World Cup, beat Poland 2-0
Lionel Messi will grace the World Cup stage at least one more time. The Argentina great had a penalty saved but his team still beat Poland 2-0 after second-half goals from Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez and advanced to the last 16. Argentina finished in first place in Group C to set up a match against surprise qualifier Australia. Poland also advanced despite the loss. Argentina has bounced back from opening the World Cup with a shocking 2-1 loss to Saudi Arabia. Messi’s likely final World Cup rolls onto Saturday. He will be relieved after failing to score a penalty for the second straight World Cup.

Mexico 2, Saudi Arabia 1 – Mexico beats Saudi Arabia 2-1 but falls short at World Cup
Henry Martin and Luis Chaves scored a goal each in Mexico’s furious attempt to stay alive at the World Cup but the 2-1 victory over Saudi Arabia was not enough. Argentina beat Poland 2-0 in a simultaneous match so Mexico was eliminated from the group stage for the first time since 1978. Mexico had reached the round of 16 at the last seven World Cups. That was tied with Brazil for the longest current streak. El Tri went into the match at Lusail Stadium needing a victory and help from Poland to advance in Group C. Argentina’s victory meant goal difference came into play and Mexico missed out.

FIFA – World Cup win increases prize money for American men, women
The U.S. women’s team will make at least three times more from the men’s World Cup than they received for winning the 2019 women’s tournament. That’s thanks to a new deal to split World Cup earnings. A 1-0 win by the men over Iran on Tuesday night increased their World Cup prize money to approximately $380,000 for each player in the squad. The same applies to players on the U.S. roster for the 2023 Women’s World Cup because of the new collective bargaining agreements between the U.S. Soccer Federation and the men’s and women’s unions.

FIFA – Pulisic listed as day-to-day with pelvic injury at World Cup
U.S. forward Christian Pulisic is day to day after sustaining a pelvic injury during his team’s 1-0 World Cup win against Iran that sent the Americans to the round of 16 of the tournament. Pulisic scored the 38th-minute winning goal against Iran, but crashed into Iranian goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand during the same play. The Chelsea striker was substituted at the start of the second half and taken to a hospital for tests. U.S. Soccer later posted a video showing Pulisic celebrating with his teammates at the team’s hotel.
