St. Joseph Restaurants Raising Funds For Benton Heights Community Center

A fundraiser for a planned Benton Heights community center is set for this coming weekend at two downtown St. Joseph restaurants. New Heights Christian Community Development Association Director Chris Britton tells us Schu’s and Tim’s Too are raising money for the New Heights Laundry Hub. The facility has been in the works for several years. Britton says surveys have found there’s a lack of laundry facilities in the Benton Heights area.

“It’s a felt and measured need in that community, access to laundry,” Britton said. “So we thought, why don’t we bring in a laundromat, but instead of just stopping there, let’s bring in and make space for other services and other agencies to deliver services to a community in need.”

However, Britton says the laundry hub won’t just be a laundromat. There will be space for community organizations offering services in demand.

“When people are washing their clothes, maybe they can be speaking to a financial coach, or they can be doing a consultation with a nurse or getting some career development services delivered to them.”

The New Heights Laundry Hub will be located at the northeast corner of Red Arrow Highway and Euclid and ground will be broken in the spring. Britton says to help reach the $1.1 million goal for the 3,000 square foot center, Schu’s and Tim’s Too will donate 100% of their proceeds this Sunday to New Heights Christian Community Development Association. The fundraiser will take place between noon and 8 p.m. and everyone’s invited to contribute.
