It’s not everyone’s favorite – political talk around the Thanksgiving table. Experts say that if you don’t like conflict while eating turkey, don’t start a conversation if you don’t want to listen to the other person’s point of view. Jaime Clayton is president and CEO of Oakland Family Services. She gave some Thanksgiving tips to Michigan News Network.

“Don’t event into a conversation where you’re going to disagree if you don’t want to sit and listen to the other person’s point of view,” Clayton said. “A lot of the time, we’re not listening. We’re trying to come up with out own comeback in advance. You can have discussions and you can disagree without being disagreeable.”

Clayton says families need to restore the art of political conversation, without it becoming a battle. She says this Thanksgiving, that starts with avoiding the urge to convince someone that your opinion is the only one that’s right.
