Angels 10, Tigers 0 – Ohtani, Trout power Angels to 10-0 win over Tigers
Shohei Ohtani had his sixth multi-homer game of the season, Mike Trout also went deep and José Suarez threw three-hit ball over seven innings as the Los Angeles Angels routed the skidding Detroit Tigers 10-0. Luis Rengifo had a career-high four hits and drove in a run for the Angels, who had their second-biggest offensive performance of the season with 16 hits. It is the seventh time this season Ohtani and Trout have homered in the same game. Trout’s solo shot to left field in the fifth off Tyler Alexander was his 30th homer of the season, marking the seventh time in his 12-year career he has reached that plateau.

White Sox 3, Mariners 2 – Lynn dominates as White Sox snap M’s streak with 3-2 win
Lance Lynn mowed through Seattle striking out a season-high 11, Elvis Andrus hit a two-run home run, and the Chicago White Sox snapped the Mariners’ seven-game win streak with a 3-2 win. Lynn retired the final 17 batters he faced in a dominant outing against a Seattle lineup that looked sleepy following a long Sunday in Cleveland and an early-morning arrival back in the Pacific Northwest. Lynn didn’t allow a base runner after Abraham Toro’s bloop RBI single in the second inning that right fielder Andrew Vaughn appeared to lose briefly in the sun. The 11 strikeouts were one off his career high. Seattle starter Marco Gonzales threw seven strong innings but allowed two home runs.

NCAAFB – Harbaugh hopes players get a revenue share from 12-team CFP
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh hopes players get a cut of the revenue generated by an expanded College Football Playoff. The plan to expand the CFP from four teams was approved Friday, and the new-look tournament will begin as soon as 2024 and as late as 2026. The 11 university leaders who make up CFP’s Board of Managers approved the original 12-team proposal in a unanimous vote that was necessary to pursue early expansion. Six of the highest-ranked conference champions and six at-large, selection-committee selections will earn a spot in the new playoff format.

Tennis – US Open – Tiafoe ends Nadal’s 22-match Slam streak in US Open 4th Rd
Frances Tiafoe has ended Rafael Nadal’s 22-match winning streak at Grand Slam tournaments by beating the 22-time major champion 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the U.S. Open’s fourth round. Tiafoe is a 24-year-old from Maryland who is seeded 22nd at Flushing Meadows and reached the second major quarterfinal of his career. He is the youngest American man to get that far at the U.S. Open since Andy Roddick in 2006. This surprise came a day after Nick Kyrgios eliminated No. 1 seed and defending champion Daniil Medvedev. That makes this the first U.S. Open without either of the top two seeded men reaching the quarterfinals since 2000.

Tennis – US Open – No. 3 Alcaraz beats Cilic in 5-set match | US Open updates
It’s going to be a U.S. Open quarterfinals matchup of two rising stars when third-seeded Carlos Alcaraz plays No. 11-seed Jannik Sinner. The 19-year-old Alcaraz was the last to advance in one of the longest nights ever at the Open with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over 2014 U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Alcaraz dropped to his knees when he won the grueling match that lasted nearly four hours and ended around 2:25 a.m. Alcaraz was already the youngest man to reach the fourth round in consecutive U.S. Open since Pete Sampras in 1989 and ’90.

NFL – Bears’ Eberflus appreciates moment with opener at hand
Matt Eberflus can appreciate the moment. He’s a first-time head coach trying to turn around a founding NFL franchise, and the next big step comes this week when the Chicago Bears host the San Francisco 49ers in the season opener. Eberflus says it’s “always special when you do something for the first time” and is “part of your story that you’re writing.” The Bears hired general manager Ryan Poles and Eberflus to replace the fired Ryan Pace and Matt Nagy after going 6-11 and missing the playoffs for the ninth time in 11 years.

NFL – NFL returning to London for international combine in October
The NFL is holding an international combine in London for the second consecutive year. Forty-four athletes will be selected to participate in the combine in front of NFL evaluators at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Oct. 3-4. NASCAR – NASCAR’s wild regular season rolls over into playoffs
If NASCAR’s playoff opener at Darlington Raceway was any indication, the postseason is going to be a wild one. Erik Jones became the first non-playoff driver to win NASCAR’s opening playoff race. Several top seeds expected to compete like Chase Elliott, Kyle Larson, Kevin Harvick and Kyle Busch were out of contention at the end. Elliott was the top playoff seed and hit the wall early. Harvick’s car caught fire and he went from ninth in points to 16th on the brink of elimination. Defending series champ Larson was several laps down before finishing 12th.
