Tigers 4, Guardians 3 – Carpenter hits HR, Francona ejected as Tigers beat Guardians
Rookie Kerry Carpenter homered for the second straight night and the Detroit Tigers survived a wild ninth inning to defeat the Cleveland Guardians 4-3. Cleveland manager Terry Francona was ejected for arguing when the umpires ruled Myles Straw struck out with the tying run on third for the second out of the inning. Plate umpire Lance Barksdale originally ruled Straw fouled off a 2-2 pitch from Tigers closer Gregory Soto. The four umpires had a meeting and ruled Straw swung and missed for strike three. Francona argued the call with Barksdale and was quickly ejected.

White Sox 4, Astros 3 – Moncada hits winning single in 8th again, ChiSox beat Astros
Yoán Moncada came through with the go-ahead single in the eighth inning for the second straight game, and the Chicago White Sox rallied to beat the Houston Astros 4-3. The White Sox have won five straight. They moved within a game of AL Central leader Cleveland. Moncada hit a tiebreaking two-run single in Monday’s 4-2 win. This time, Chicago had a runner on third when he singled to center against Héctor Neris to make it 4-3. The showdown between AL Cy Young Award contenders Dylan Cease and Justin Verlander didn’t live up to its billing. Each allowed three runs.

Cubs 7, Nationals 5 – F/11 – Wisdom’s double in 11th propels Cubs to 7-5 win over Nats
Patrick Wisdom drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning, and the Chicago Cubs beat the Washington Nationals 7-5. Wisdom led off the inning with a double down the left-field line against Victor Arano, scoring automatic runner Willson Contreras. Wisdom then went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Seiya Suzuki’s single. Brandon Hughes pitched the 10th for Chicago and Mark Leiter Jr. worked the 11th for his first save. Nationals prospect C.J. Abrams extended the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th, his first hit with Washington.

MLB – La Russa rejects idea fan pushed him to use pinch runner
White Sox manager Tony La Russa got a kick out of the idea that a screaming spectator convinced him to insert a pinch-runner during Chicago’s winning rally against the Houston Astros on Monday night. La Russa insisted Tuesday he had no idea a fan near the dugout was yelling for him to send in Adam Engel to run for Eloy Jiménez when he made the move. Jiménez had just hit a tying, two-run double during a four-run eighth inning that propelled Chicago to a 4-2 victory. A smiling La Russa told reporters to “make his day, tell him I heard him.” La Russa said he and his staff were trying to decide whether to keep Jiménez in for a potential at-bat later with the game tied in the eighth.

NBA – NBA schedule won’t have games on Election Day this year
The NBA will be off on Election Day. The league’s schedule for the coming season will have all 30 teams playing on Nov. 7. That’s the night before the midterm elections. The NBA is hoping teams use that night as an opportunity to encourage fans to get out and vote, plus amplify the need for civic engagement. Nov. 8 is Election Day and no NBA teams have games scheduled then. The move is a rarity for the league. The NBA typically plays no games on Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve and tries to avoid scheduling games on the day of the NCAA men’s basketball championship game.

NBA – Bulls rookie Lewis needs knee surgery, out indefinitely
The Chicago Bulls say rookie Justin Lewis will need surgery to repair an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee and is out indefinitely. The team said Tuesday that Lewis was injured last weekend and will have surgery in the coming weeks. The 6-foot-8 forward went undrafted after averaging 16.8 points and 7.9 rebounds as a sophomore at Marquette. He signed with the Bulls in July.

NFL – Seattle QB Lock tests positive for COVID-19; out vs. Bears
Seattle Seahawks quarterback Drew Lock has tested positive for COVID-19 and will miss the team’s preseason game against Chicago. The Seahawks issued a statement regarding Lock’s positive test about two hours following the end of a practice in which Lock was a full participant and led the No. 1 offense. Seattle coach Pete Carroll announced after practice that Lock would start Thursday’s game against the Bears after he served as the backup to Geno Smith in last weekend’s preseason game in Pittsburgh. Lock was acquired from Denver as part of the trade that sent Russell Wilson to the Broncos and has been competing with Smith for the starting job with the Seahawks.

NFL – QB Stafford shows no throwing limitations in Rams scrimmage
Matthew Stafford showed no throwing limitations while fully participating in a scrimmage with the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday. Stafford’s smooth play further underlined the Super Bowl-winning quarterback’s declaration that his injured elbow will be fine. Stafford made all sorts of throws during the lengthy scrimmage at the Rams’ training complex. Coach Sean McVay was pleased by the latest step in the veteran quarterback’s increased workload. The 34-year-old Stafford played through elbow pain last season while leading the Rams to the title in his first season with the team. He had an unspecified elbow injection in the offseason.

NFL – NFL looks like old self entering 3rd season in COVID-19 era
The NFL essentially is back to normal entering its third season amid COVID-19. Derrick Henry has been seen jogging on the field with his daughter after practice. Green Bay Packers are once again borrowing kids’ bicycles for the ride to practice. Fans are up close to their favorite players getting autographs, high-fives and handshakes. There are no more trailers or tents for testing and masks are rare. All the protocols devised and tweaked by the league and the NFL Players Association implemented in 2020 and 2021 were suspended last March with the NFL citing trends showing the spread of the coronavirus declining.

LLWS – Utah boy injured in dorm fall at Little League World Series
A 12-year-old Little League World Series player from Utah is in critical condition with what his family said was a head injury suffered when he fell off a bunk bed at the dormitory complex in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Easton Oliverson is a pitcher and outfielder for the Snow Canyon team out of Santa Clara, Utah. His dad, Jace Oliverson, is an assistant coach on the team. Oliverson posted on Facebook that doctors told him his son had punctured an artery which caused bleeding on the brain and needed a piece of skull removed. His uncle tells The Associated Press that Easton is using a breathing tube.

NCAAFB – G5 teams could have fewer chances vs. P5 after realignment
The realignment in the major conferences could lead to fewer opportunities in the future for Group of Five teams to play those bigger schools. Cincinnati was the first G5 team to make the College Football Playoff last year when its undefeated regular season included road wins over Notre Dame and Indiana. But the games most G5 and FCS schools play against the Power Five teams are about the paycheck they get to help finance their programs. The SEC and Big Ten are both set to expand to at least 16 teams over the next few seasons. The other Power Five leagues also are going through transitions.

Tennis – Serena Williams loses to Raducanu; US Open next
Serena Williams has fallen to 0-2 in matches since announcing “the countdown has begun” on her career. She lost 6-4, 6-0 to U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu in the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday night. The 40-year-old Williams said last week in a Vogue magazine essay and an Instagram post that her career was winding down. She did not explicitly say the U.S. Open, which begins Aug. 29 in New York, would be her last tournament. Williams is a 23-time Grand Slam champion, most recently in 2017 at the Australian Open. She has said expanding her family is a big reason she plans to step away.
