The start of the new school year is right around the corner. Parents beginning to talk with their children to prepare them for the new year. Associate professor of Educational Psychology and director of the Families and Mental Wellness Lab at Wayne State University, Dr. Erika Bocknek, says the two COVID affected school years has put everyone out of their comfort zone.

“I think what’s really important to think about in regards to how children may have absorbed the last two years, it’s not so much these last two years have been lost, but they’ve been extraordinarily different from what parents expected them to be,” Bocknek said. “For most children, they’re just now part of their childhood narrative. We just need to reflect on that.”

With COVID guidelines easing, many see this upcoming school year as the closest return to normalcy since the start of the pandemic. Some school districts begin classes in the next couple weeks, while the majority of Michigan schools will begin following Labor Day.
