In a survey of likely voters, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has some work to do if she wants to be re-elected. According to the survey, conducted by the Lansing-based Marketing and Resource Group, only 34% of respondents indicated that they would vote for Whitmer in November, while 59% say they’ll “leave the door open” for other possible candidates. Janelle Leonard is the owner of Marketing and Resource Group.

“With President Biden and with Democrats controlling Congress, usually Michigan voters generally respond to the national political and economic climate here which right now isn’t good news for Democrats,” says Leonard. “Our poll also showed that 68% believe that the country is headed in the wrong direction and Biden has a 40% job approval rating.”

According to Leonard, the survey indicates that Michigan voters believe that jobs and the economy are the top issues in this year’s election along with inflation and infrastructure spending. An incumbent governor hasn’t lost an election here in Michigan since James Blanchard lost to John Engler, more than 30 years ago.
