A recently released report from the state’s auditor general identified nearly 24-hundred additional COVID-19 deaths linked to long-term care facilities over an 18-month period than what the state reported. Governor Gretchen Whitmer says the actions implemented by her administration saved lives.

“There’s no discrepancy here,” says Whitmer. “The numbers are collected by the long term care facilities. The auditor general’s report says that the state’s data was accurate. I encourage everyone to actually read it.”

Her handling of nursing homes during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a key point of disagreement with Republican lawmakers. A statement from the Department of Health and Human Services says it had “serious concerns” about the methodology used and worried it misinterpreted the integrity of the department.
