Senator Gary Peters took to the Senate floor Wednesday to push for passage of voting rights legislation. He pointed to the events leading up to the January 6 attack on the Capitol, saying efforts were made in several states to interfere with the certification of presidential election results. Peters said it happened even in Michigan.

“It basically came down to one vote, just one vote from one Republican member of the board of canvassers, one canvasser who dared to withstand the intense political pressure on him to ignore the will of the people and not certify those results,” Peters said.

Peters said that person was removed from the board by Republicans and threatened. He said with elections boards across the country being stuffed with people who would not have such voted to certify and legislative efforts to reduce voting rates, now is the time to protect the nation’s most basic right. Peters called for an up or down vote on the legislation.
