Lake Michigan College has announced the winners of its Spirit of MLK Spotlight Awards for the year. The recipients were named during the kickoff to LMC’s MLK Week on Monday morning. Winning the group award was the Boys and Girls Club of Benton Harbor. LMC Dean of Diversity and Equity Major Cooper tells WSJM News the organization does a variety of work with local young people.

“The Boys and Girls Club has been very hands on with helping the community, helping individuals, even people outside of their club, and I think that was really, truly a great opportunity, a remarkable award given to them,” Cooper said.

The student award went to Ainesh Shintre, of the All God’s Children Community Choir.

“He’s an alumni of All God’s Children, he’s doing remarkable work around documenting the history of All God’s Children, as well as being a social justice advocate within the community.”

Cooper says Shintre made a documentary called “Heart to Heart,” which centers on the work of All God’s Children Community Choir to build bridges across racial divides. The final Spirit of MLK Spotlight Award went to Diane Young, the manager of the Business Resource Network at Michigan Works. She has worked to strengthen the community and led food distribution events. LMC will continue MLK activities all week. We have a schedule at our website.
